We aren‘t in this leadership thing so people love us. In fact, when we (women) are highly effective, many people see our strengths (like confidence, assertiveness, directness, fearlessness, risk-taking) and don’t love us very much. My name is Kim, and I’d like to change that.
I started my leadership journey while enrolled in Douglass College, the all-women’s college at Rutgers the State University of New Jersey. During my time there, I learned that I have strengths and I have opportunities. I surrounded myself with a tribe of women who came to the table with different life experiences, strengths, and opportunities. When we all supported and celebrated each other, we all won. Some of those women are still my biggest cheerleaders and confidants.
Over the past 16 years, I’ve been working! All the while I got married, had two children, changed jobs a couple of times, provided caregiving for a family member, adopted two dogs and kicked cancer. On my personal and professional journey, I learned a lot about myself, leadership, coaching, strategy, and navigating the interpersonal nuances of the business landscape. I’ve worked for Fortune 200, Fortune 500, and private companies. I’ve worked in the fashion, paid TV, and professional sports industries. Guess what? Good leaders have similar qualities despite different environments. I’m hoping that some of my experience and observation will help you find what you are looking for.
Lastly, my personal experience is that it isn’t easy being a woman in business, especially when the top looks mostly male. To compound this further, it isn’t easy being successful at home when there isn’t an equal distribution of work. The pressures on women in and outside of the workplace are significant. My wish for this collective is that women converge in a supportive learning environment and reflect together on how they can unleash their potential. I also want us to uplift one another without charging hundreds or thousands of dollars like other professional networks do. So, let’s learn, do some deep reflection and adjust each other’s crowns.
